The HD misunderstanding or: I'll keep my telly!

Who needs HD-television? I would like to find out whether there are other people who ask themselves, why use this new technology when the old technology still works, looks good and is alredy on hand at home? For the moment, I wont be buying any new video-equipment, I just don't need it at home, as the good old telly is more than enough, I would rather spend my saved money at the cinema. Who would like to join me?

Am I simply unbelievably ignorant and easily satisfied? Is there some ingenious detail about HD-technology that I have missed? The stress of HD-DVD versus Blue-Ray-disc and the constantly present "HD-Ready-Be-Prepared-For-When-Its-Coming" stickers on new televisions remind me fatally of the video-disaster of the 70s: Betamax, Video 2000 and VHS – my parents did not join in and I bought my first video tape recorder when only VHS existed...
